A collection of essays highlighting the science, the beauty, and the mystery of the Muskwa-Kechika region of northern British Columbia
I was invited to travel the Muskwa-Kechika region and produce a work of art to help protect it. A handmade edition of Into the Space and Silence was featured at the Muskwa-Kechika International Art Show in British Columbia in 2009. The region is one of the last remaining intact ecosystems in North America, and is linked ecologically to Yellowstone National Park two thousand miles to the south.
The book was constructed to begin with the poetry of the land flowing into the science on the reverse side. These two ways of understanding nature are inextricably linked. My intent was to illustrate how energy flows freely through wildlife corridors and sustains their vitality.
The Yellowstone to Yukon wildlife corridor (the “Y2Y”) runs from Yellowstone National Park and up through Canada, into the heart of the Yukon. The Y2Y is a critical migration route for millions of animals, birds, and even plants. Learn more about some of the animals that depend on the Y2Y in On Borrowed Ground, an article I wrote for Teton Valley Top to Bottom Magazine.

“Animal lover or not, you can’t read Susan’s writing without feeling a connection to the natural world and a sense of your own ‘animalness.’ Her affinity for wild animals translates into lyric descriptions of their lives and purpose on this planet we share, too often grudgingly on our part. With lovingly rendered detail, Dr. Eirich intimately states the case for conservation of habitats and species.”
